Life sentence for setting acquaintance on fire. Court: victim burned like a torch
A court in Lublin sentenced Kamil P. to life imprisonment for the murder of a 26-year-old man. The defendant first doused the injured party with paint thinner and set him alight, then prevented him from calling for help by keeping him confined. The victim died.
The sentence is higher than the prosecution's request. During the trial, Kamil P. claimed that the entire incident was supposed to be a "stupid joke" and he did not intend to harm his acquaintance. He asked the court for a chance to return to society.
The court did not believe the defendant's explanations. According to the judges, when someone douses a person with flammable liquid and sets it alight, they must reckon with the consequence of death, regardless of whether the victim catches fire or manages to extinguish the flames. The court also rejected the explanation that a small amount of liquid was used.
— The injured party was like a torch, which indicates that the flammable substance was not used sparingly. Such scenes are seen in the event of a napalm attack — the court stated.
