Two men charged following attack on Poznań mayor
During Tuesday's final session in Poznań, two men attacked mayor Jacek Jaśkowiak. One of them threw a cake with whipped cream at him. Police detained both and brought charges against them.
A 40-year-old, who threw the cake, was accused of insulting a public official and violating his bodily integrity. A 22-year-old will face charges of aiding and abetting the crime. According to investigators, the younger man stood in front of the mayor holding a banner, diverting his attention from the perpetrator.
Both were placed under police supervision. They must report to the police station three times a week. The court also imposed a restraining order preventing them from approaching Jaśkowiak or the city office on Plac Kolegiata at a distance of less than twenty metres.
They face a sentence of up to three years in prison for these acts. The case is being handled by the Poznań city police headquarters. In parallel, proceedings are underway for a violation of public order in a public place.
The incident occurred after the conclusion of the city status report. A group of activists entered the council chamber. The attacker shouted at the mayor, saying it was a "vote of no confidence from Poznań residents". City guards subdued him and removed him from the chamber.
Mayor Jaśkowiak later stated that he is not afraid of such attacks. He also suggested that the incident could have been orchestrated by people connected with the Razem party, referring to an earlier conflict with Member of Parliament Marcelina Zawisza.
