According to wiadomosci.gazeta.pl, two separate incidents involving aggression towards staff at the Hospital Emergency Department in Nowy Targ occurred within a single night.
The first intervention concerned a 68-year-old female patient. Senior Sergeant Łukasz Burek from the County Police Command in Nowy Targ reports: "The woman grabbed the paramedic by the arm, insulted her with vulgar words. She was aggressive, causing a disturbance." A report was filed for assault. Due to the woman's state of health, she was not detained and remained on the ward.
At the same time, a 34-year-old man, a resident of Nowy Targ commune, who was intoxicated, started a disturbance, shouted and made threats towards medical personnel. The duty doctor determined that the man did not require hospitalisation, which enabled police to take him to a detention cell. After sobering up, officers fined him with a penalty notice.
The night-time incidents were not the only cases of aggression on this ward. Just a few days earlier, on 27 June, a 48-year-old resident of Czarny Dunajec commune struck a nurse in the face and kicked a paramedic. The man faces up to three years in prison. In December of last year, a drunken 65-year-old resident of Nowy Targ grabbed a nurse and twisted her arm – the case proceeded to further court proceedings.
Since January, regulations have been in force tightening liability for attacks on paramedics, police officers, firefighters and municipal guards. The maximum penalty is now five years in prison. The Ministry of Justice reported that citizens undertaking intervention have been afforded the same protection as public officials.
The ministry explained that any person insulted during an intervention will be treated as a public official, and the matter will be handled by the prosecutor's office at the request of the person wronged. For aggressive behaviour in a public place – including in a hospital – arrest, restriction of liberty or a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 złoty is threatened, or alternatively a penalty of 1,000 złoty.
