A court in Poznań ruled that Paweł Miter did not commit extortion against the dairy company Mlekovita. At the same time, two men who worked with him were found guilty of attempting to extort four million złotys.
The entire affair erupted when a group suspected that one of Poland's largest dairy companies was changing product expiry dates. Rather than reporting the matter to law enforcement, two of the journalist's acquaintances decided to demand money from Mlekovita in exchange for their silence on the subject.
During the court proceedings, it emerged that the prosecutor's office had committed a series of procedural errors. The judge found that Paweł Miter did not take part in any crime. However, his acquaintances were less fortunate – they face a custodial sentence.
The judge described the conduct of the accused as "scenes straight out of the Polish People's Republic", referring to the methods used during the communist era.
The verdict concludes one of the most high-profile trials in recent years concerning the food industry and media relations with large corporations.
