Ten injured in machete attack at school in Poland
Ten people were injured today, 7 October 2026, in a machete attack at a vocational school for teenagers in the town of Ostrołęka in north-eastern Poland, according to Newsit.gr. The 19-year-old suspect, himself a pupil at the school, was arrested by police and is among the injured, having wounded himself.
Regional governor Paweł Niewiądomski told journalists that nine people were taken to hospital, with none facing life-threatening injuries. "Among the injured are five pupils, two teachers and two paramedics, as well as the perpetrator, who wounded himself," the regional governor said.
The attack occurred around 12:00 Greek time. Police announced the arrest of the suspect approximately 20 minutes later and published a photograph on X showing a man lying face down in a wooded area, apparently arrested.
A spokesman for the fire service, Adrian Stupski, told state television channel TVP Info that pupils barricaded themselves in classrooms for protection before being safely removed from the building. Bomb disposal experts examined the suspect's rucksack, although authorities did not clarify whether anything was found inside.
Following the attack, all schools in Ostrołęka were closed and children were safely handed over to their parents. The perpetrator's motives remain unclear.
Such incidents are rare in Poland. In September, however, police had arrested a 13-year-old as a suspect for planning an attack after finding a knife in his bag.
