A 19-year-old Ukrainian citizen was attacked by a group of people in the south-western part of Wrocław. The incident occurred last Saturday. The victim claims that the perpetrators heard him speaking on the phone to his mother in Ukrainian, which became the cause of the attack.
According to "Radio Wrocław", the young man sustained bodily injuries, including a broken nose, and was bleeding. The effects of the beating persisted for longer than a week.
The victim himself described the course of events in a conversation with Polish television "TVN24". Before the attack, a young man approached him and demanded that he hand over an electronic cigarette.
"When I politely refused, he started insulting me. He claimed that I had offended him, although I had said nothing bad to him. He threatened that if I did not apologise, he would call his friends and it would have dire consequences for me," the 19-year-old recounted.
According to his account, a group of around twelve people appeared shortly after. Two of them knocked him to the ground and began to beat him.
"When I tried to get up, they struck me two or three times. I had no chance to defend myself. They ripped a cross from my neck and my shirt, then covered my face with them and started hitting me from all sides," he said in the interview.
The 19-year-old stated that the attackers knew his nationality. One of his friends later heard the perpetrators boasting about beating a Ukrainian, according to "TVP World".
A police spokesman, cited by that channel, informed that investigators are collecting footage from monitoring cameras and are asking witnesses to contact the police.
The incident took place during a period of tensions between Poland and Ukraine, following President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to grant a name to a nationalist organisation that played a major role in crimes against approximately 100,000 Poles during the Second World War, a special battalion of the armed forces.
