Former head of military counterintelligence detained before departure on holiday

Former head of the Military Counterintelligence Service, General Piotr Pytel, was detained at the airport at the moment when he intended to depart on leave – according to Google News PL, citing reports from Wiadomości Onet, TVN24 and wiadomosci.wp.pl.

The detention of the former SKW commander provoked an immediate reaction from lawyer and former member of the National Council of the Judiciary Waldemar Żurek, who sharply commented on this decision. Żurek spared no criticism of the services' actions, questioning the justification and circumstances of the general's detention.

The matter was complicated by a report from RMF24, according to which the minister of justice was involved in the incident. The intervention of the head of the ministry constitutes a significant turn in this case, although details of his actions have not been fully disclosed.

General Pytel headed the Military Counterintelligence Service and is a well-recognised figure in Poland's security and intelligence circles. His detention at the airport – in circumstances indicating a planned private trip – has sparked widespread commentary in the domestic media.
