According to Google News PL, lawyer Roman Giertych has announced that he has taken on the defence of Marcin Kral, the former chief executive of the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange, who is accused in criminal proceedings.
Giertych publicly addressed speculation regarding his remuneration. "I am not taking money from Mr Kral," the barrister stated, though he did not specify on what financial terms his involvement in the case is based.
Giertych's decision prompted a wide-ranging discussion. The WP Wiadomości portal noted a wave of comments on social media, with one user asking directly: "Do we consider this normal?". Lawyers representing victims in the Zondacrypto case questioned some of Giertych's claims – including his statement about Kral's "enormous wealth".
Ryszard Kalisz, a former justice minister and lawyer, told TVN24 that Kral "realised that he would no longer have protection", thereby suggesting the motives behind the former chief executive's decision to choose a high-profile defender.
Critical voices came from the government directed at Giertych. Polsat News cites a statement from a government representative, who described the lawyer's involvement as "putting it mildly, unfortunate".
The Zondacrypto case concerns allegations made against the former management of one of Poland's largest cryptocurrency trading platforms.
