Assassination threat against Prime Minister Tusk: Polish police launch measures

Police and ABW take action following information about possible assassination attempt on Tusk

Polish police received information about a possible assassination attempt on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to dnevnik.si. Security services immediately launched appropriate measures.

Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka confirmed the information on social network X. "Following receipt of police information about a possible assassination attempt on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and the minister responsible for coordinating special services, Tomasz Siemoniak, ordered appropriate measures," Gałecka wrote.

An extraordinary meeting was convened at the crisis management centre of the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) at 11 o'clock. It was attended by representatives of the police, the State Protection Service, which is responsible for the security of the highest state officials, and members of the ABW.

Polish authorities have not yet revealed details of the information received. It is not known who may have been behind the threat, how a potential attack was supposed to be carried out, or whether security services have confirmed a direct threat to the Prime Minister and Defence Minister.

Series of violent attacks on schools

The threat comes at a time when Poland is facing a series of violent attacks on educational institutions. Three attacks occurred in the Warsaw area and its surroundings within days.

On Thursday, a 15-year-old former pupil attacked staff at a primary school in Leszczydół-Nowiny, approximately 50 kilometres from Warsaw. A 37-year-old school caretaker died, and the headmaster and a teacher were injured. The suspected teenager was arrested.

A day earlier, a 19-year-old attacked multiple people at a school and its surroundings with a sharp object, injuring nine people.

On Saturday, a third attack followed at a private school in Warsaw's Praga district. A woman injured three people with a dangerous object, including two 17-year-olds. No one sustained life-threatening injuries, and the suspect was detained.

Tusk: these are spontaneous, not coordinated attacks

Following the series of violent incidents, Polish authorities have increased police surveillance of schools and launched extensive security checks. Prime Minister Tusk met with ministers and security service representatives in the morning. According to his account, current findings do not indicate the existence of an organised group coordinating the attacks — they appear mostly to be spontaneous violent incidents linked to online activity and glorification of violent perpetrators.

Police detained dozens of people across the country for threats and illegal possession of weapons. Security checks are continuing over the weekend.

Whether the information about the possibility of an attack on Tusk is in any way connected to the school attacks is still being investigated by police.
