Polish police suspect plots to assassinate Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the Defence Minister. The Interior Ministry has ordered security services to take immediate action.
Polish security services urgently convened following reports of threat to Prime Minister
Poland's Interior Ministry announced on Sunday that police suspect assassination plots against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to lnk.lt.
Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka stated on social media platform X that institutions have been ordered to take action "in light of information received about a possible assassination attempt against the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister", who simultaneously holds the position of Defence Minister.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Minister overseeing intelligence services Tomasz Siemoniak instructed security institutions to take urgent measures. Representatives of the Police, the State Protection Service and the Polish Internal Security Agency met at 11 a.m. local time (12 p.m. Lithuanian time) at the agency's counter-terrorism centre in Warsaw.
The spokesman for the minister coordinating special services, Jacek Dobrzyński, told the PAP agency that he was unable to provide more detailed information about the reported threat. He added that the media would be informed if officials decide to hold a press conference.
Government spokesman Adam Szlapka told private broadcaster Polsat News that "the matter is serious". According to him, Tusk was informed of the threat on Sunday at approximately 7 a.m. and remained in Warsaw to continue his official duties.
"The security services are, of course, working on this matter, and all information that can be disclosed at this stage will be provided immediately after the meeting," stated Szlapka.
In September, Tusk warned of potentially intensifying Russian hybrid attacks on NATO's eastern flank, stating that Moscow was planning strikes against European countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland. Moscow denies such plans.
This week, Polish officials declared a high-level state of alert following three attacks at schools over four days in Mazovia Voivodeship in central Poland.
