A dangerous situation unfolded in one of the apartment blocks in Brzeg when a 33-year-old tenant turned off a gas cylinder and began threatening to cause an explosion. Officers from the Brzeg unit intervened on the scene and neutralised the threat. The man now faces up to eight years behind bars.
The incident began with a call to the emergency line. The caller, in a state of extreme agitation, informed the duty officer that he had turned off the gas supply and intended to set it on fire. A patrol was sent to the building immediately.
At the scene, police officers found the man's family in front of the flat door. Inside, the perpetrator had barricaded himself. He was aggressive, shouting and repeating threats of arson. Through a gap in the door, officers could see that he was sitting by a cooker with a gas cylinder connected, and was holding a lighter in his hand.
Officers entered the flat, subdued the aggressor and closed the gas supply, which had already filled the rooms. During the intervention, it emerged that the man was completely intoxicated — a test showed nearly 4 per mille alcohol content in his blood.
In the course of further investigation, it transpired that the 33-year-old was listed in the system as a wanted person subject to an arrest warrant in order to serve a sentence for previous thefts. After his detention, he was informed of charges of creating a threat to the lives of many people. He is currently in prison.
