Neurosurgeons earned 26,000 zloty per hour – head of NML on hospital scandal
A neurosurgeons' company allegedly billed more expensive procedures than those actually performed, earning as much as 26,000 zloty per hour. The National Medical Chamber has launched its own investigation into the matter.

According to wiadomosci.wp.pl, a neurosurgeons' company operating across several voivodeships allegedly earned as much as 26,000 zloty per hour by reporting significantly more expensive medical procedures than those actually performed. The case was exposed by Wirtualna Polska; the National Health Fund questioned the billing.
"No Pole can fathom that a neurosurgeons' company earned like Leo Messi at Inter Miami," said Dr Łukasz Jankowski, head of the National Medical Chamber (NML), in an interview with Polish Radio Programme III.
Jankowski announced that the matter must be clarified by the prosecutor's office and an independent court. "We have also launched proceedings on this matter as the National Medical Chamber," he informed.
The head of the NML drew attention to a broader system dysfunction. "We are talking about a procedure that demonstrates the system's powerlessness. If it lasted for several years, if the hospital director and the governing body agreed to it, if there were inspections and they revealed nothing, it means the system does not know what public money is being spent on," Jankowski assessed.
He added that someone should have reported the matter to the prosecutor's office much earlier. "And if money is being spent illegally, someone should have said 'stop' long ago," he emphasised.
Jankowski noted that the entire affair damages the image of the entire medical profession. "When this bomb exploded, people were rubbing their eyes in astonishment," he admitted. He simultaneously stressed that this case represents an extreme rather than a norm in the industry. "It is not as if today a neurosurgeon or anyone else comes and gets 26,000 zloty per hour," he explained.
"I do not know a doctor who earns like a footballer of a prestigious foreign club," added the NML head.
The prosecutor's office has been conducting an investigation into the hospital in Mogilno, where the company operated, for over a year and a half. According to media reports, investigators are examining two separate aspects of the case.
