The Military Police conducted a search at the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces today and detained one of the officers – according to "Polityka". The operation was carried out at the request of the prosecutor's office.
General Staff spokesman Colonel Marek Pietrzak confirmed the fact of the search and its outcome. "I cannot provide further information, but I confirm that the procedures concluded with a request for the officer's arrest," Pietrzak stated.
The military rank of the detained officer and the division in which he worked were not disclosed. Pietrzak also refused to confirm reports of a connection between the search and the investigation into child abuse material, referring the matter to the Military Police. At the time of publication, the organisation's website contained no statement regarding today's activities.
According to "Polityka"'s sources, the arrested officer collected and distributed child abuse material. The case raises particular concerns in the context of national security. "People involved in such matters are extremely susceptible to blackmail and betrayal of their country. And it happens that the most sensitive information is stored at the General Staff," a magazine source said.
According to Pietrzak, the officer had been under investigation for some time. "The detention and all activities at the General Staff took place in full cooperation with the services," the spokesman added.
