"Doctor" fraud scams in Warsaw
According to tvp.info, Warsaw police officers arrested a 19-year-old suspected of fraud using the "doctor" method and a 47-year-old who was driving a Toyota Corolla stolen in Germany. The first man was said to have taken nearly 84,000 zlotys from an 84-year-old resident of Praga-Północ.
Five arrest warrants, enforcement orders and a European Arrest Warrant had been issued against the second man.
The fraud occurred on 9 September at around midnight. Men posing as doctors from a Warsaw hospital called the senior citizen and claimed that her friend needed an expensive vaccine imported from America. One of the callers posed as the friend himself and asked for financial assistance. At 2 a.m., the woman handed the young man nearly 84,000 zlotys. In the morning, she contacted her relatives and the allegedly ill friend — that was when she realised the fraud and reported it to police.
Detectives quickly identified and arrested the 19-year-old resident of Praga-Północ. The man was said to have received the money. According to police, he had previously participated in a similar fraud in Gdańsk. He was charged with fraud, which carries a sentence of up to eight years in prison. The court ordered his temporary detention for three months.
Stolen Toyota and seven years to serve
In the second case, officers from the "Kobra" unit arrested a 47-year-old driving a Toyota Corolla stolen the previous day in Germany. The vehicle, valued at 90,000 zlotys, had registration plates from a different vehicle. After checking the data, it was found that five arrest warrants, enforcement orders and a European Arrest Warrant had been issued against him. The man has over seven years in prison to serve.
The 47-year-old also had a court ban and an administrative decision prohibiting him from driving vehicles. He was charged with theft through breaking into a vehicle and driving a vehicle in breach of applicable bans. The court decided on his temporary detention for three months. In connection with the European Arrest Warrant, the district court ordered seven days' temporary detention.
