Igor M., known as "Patyk", has filed a court claim for compensation and damages for time spent in custody in connection with an accusation of murdering the former chief of the Polish police.

In Płock, proceedings have concluded in which Igor M., known as "Patyk", is demanding compensation from the State Treasury for unlawful detention in custody. The case concerns the period from April 2012 to November 2015, when the man was held under an accusation of murdering former Police Commander-in-Chief Marek Papała. The court will announce its decision on 26 June.
Hearings took place from mid-June in a specially designated courtroom, with public access excluded and under protection from increased police forces. Such measures were implemented due to Igor M.'s role as a crown witness in other proceedings.
The former chief of police was killed by gunfire on 25 June 1998 in Warsaw, on Rzymowskiego Street. He was shot in his car beneath the apartment building where he lived.
In October 2020, the court of first instance ruled "Patyk" and six other defendants not guilty. The prosecution, which had requested a life sentence, appealed. However, in November 2023, the Court of Appeal in Warsaw upheld the acquittal verdict.
The accusation was based primarily on accounts from Robert P., a former collaborator of the criminal group with which Igor M. was associated. According to investigators, the victim fell victim to a robbery carried out by several perpetrators who wanted to steal the vehicle and most likely were not aware of the owner's identity.
An application for compensation exceeding 5.2 million złoty was submitted to the Płock court in February 2025 following a decision by the Court of Appeal in Warsaw. In accordance with civil procedure regulations, this court was to handle the matter.
A spokesperson for the court informed that the announcement of the ruling would be public, but the justification — for security reasons — would not be.
