Arrests following incidents in educational facilities

According to wyborcza.pl, officers inspected nearly 35,000 educational facilities. By 17:00, 172 incidents had been recorded in which police took action in connection with well-founded suspicion of committing a prohibited act. In the course of operations, 59 people were arrested.

On Friday 9 October, 24,000 police officers, supported by municipal guards, monitored schools and their surroundings. The Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime and the Internal Security Agency monitored the situation on the internet. The operation was undertaken following a series of dangerous incidents in Polish facilities.

On Thursday 8 October, in a primary school in Leszczydole-Nowiny in Wyszków county, a 15-year-old former pupil attacked three people with a sharp instrument, including a school caretaker who died despite resuscitation efforts. A headmaster and a teacher were injured. The day before, in Ostrołęka, a 19-year-old attacked 9 people with a knife — five pupils, two teachers and two other people. On the same day in Sierpc, police arrested a 17-year-old who had planned an attack at a school.

Chief Commander of Police Inspector General Marek Boroń told TVN24 that the services were establishing the circumstances of the spread of information about the alleged "Bloody Friday". He emphasised that there is no internet "challenge" encouraging teenagers to carry out attacks. Investigations are also ongoing into potential Russian connections to the matter. The Commander indicated that the arrested people included both 10-year-olds and teenage youth, and their behaviour may result from imitation rather than participation in a challenge.

Boroń stressed that police would patrol schools for as long as necessary. Patrols would check whether people in the vicinity of facilities possessed dangerous instruments. The Commander noted police authority to search a pupil's rucksack if there is suspicion of possession of a dangerous object. He also drew attention to problems related to internet safety and shortages in child psychiatry.
