Arrest following threats against Prime Minister

Police have arrested a man suspected of planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk — Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced on Sunday afternoon. The arrest was carried out in Lower Silesia within hours of information about a possible assassination attempt being passed to security services.

According to wprost.pl, an anonymous message was received on Sunday morning at the State Protection Service's mailbox. The sender was not himself a suspect, but possessed detailed knowledge of the planned attack. The message contained, among other things, addresses where Prime Minister Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz might be located, as well as information concerning their plans.

The Prime Minister and Defence Minister were informed of the threat at around 7 a.m. Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka emphasised that whilst threats directed at public figures are not surprising, this particular signal was "exceptionally alarming". The spokesperson for the coordinator minister of special services, Jacek Dobrzyński, stressed that there was a "high probability of these threats being carried out".

At 11 a.m., a meeting of services took place at the Counter-Terrorism Centre of the Internal Security Agency — it was attended by representatives of the police, State Protection Service, Internal Security Agency, and Ministers Kierwiński and Tomasz Siemoniak. Dobrzyński explained that the decision to publicly disclose the matter was driven by the credibility of the information received.

The services did not reveal the identity of the arrested man, the specific location of the planned attack, or the type of means being prepared. It was also not confirmed whether the man had already been informed of charges and what their legal classification might be. Prime Minister Tusk thanked officers for carrying out the operation and continued work in Warsaw under the supervision of the appropriate services.
