Police officer shot dead in Kraśnik Górny – Sergeant Natan Sieroń was 29 years old
Sergeant Natan Sieroń, a police officer at the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec, died from a gunshot wound to the head during an operation in Kraśnik Górny. A man suspected of thefts opened fire on the police officers.
Death of police officer during intervention in Kraśnik Górny
Sergeant Natan Sieroń, a 29-year-old police officer at the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec, died as a result of a gunshot wound sustained while performing his official duties in Kraśnik Górny. According to wiadomosci.wp.pl, news of his death was conveyed on Friday evening.
"He departed whilst serving to the end – faithful to the words of the oath of allegiance: even at the cost of his life," the Polish police wrote in a statement.
Course of events
The shooting occurred on Thursday before noon. Criminal division officers from Bolesławiec came to see a man suspected of thefts, but did not find him on the property. While they were still there, the suspect arrived at the scene. According to wiadomosci.wp.pl's findings, upon seeing unfamiliar people, he may have thought that a rival "team" had come for him.
The man opened fire. Police officers returned shots. During the exchange of gunfire, Sergeant Sieroń was shot in the head. A helicopter from the Air Rescue Service transported him to hospital, but his life could not be saved.
Reaction from police leadership
Police emphasised in the statement that Sergeant Sieroń had served in the criminal division for just under two years.
"With great pain we received the news of the death of Sergeant Natan Sieroń. His death is an enormous tragedy for his Family, those close to him, his colleagues and the entire police community," it was stated.
The Chief Commander of Police, Inspector General Marek Boroń, and the leadership of the Polish Police expressed their deepest condolences to his family and those close to him.
Severe consequences for the perpetrator
The detained man will face charges in connection with the death of the police officer. The murder of a police officer whilst on duty constitutes a qualified type of offence in Polish law – punishable by imprisonment of 15 to 30 years or life imprisonment. As noted by wiadomosci.wp.pl, an attempted act carries the same penalty as the completed offence.
