Emergency meeting of Polish security services over assassination plot

Polish security services held an emergency meeting on Sunday following information about a potential assassination attempt against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to In.gr.

Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the special services, stated that the threat is being treated as "extremely serious", declining to provide further details for reasons of national security. "We are talking about a high probability of these threats being carried out," he told journalists.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałęcka said that an email with information concerning the potential attack was passed to police by the State Protection Service — the body responsible for the security of ministers. According to her, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Minister-Coordinator of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak gave orders for measures to be taken following a "potential assassination attempt against the Prime Minister… as well as the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister".

Dobrzyński subsequently emphasised that "month after month, year after year, more and more threats and concerning messages reach the police", adding that in this particular case the probability of the threats being carried out was particularly high.

Violent crime remains relatively rare in Poland, however the country is experiencing intense political polarisation and faces increased security threats because of its proximity to the war in Ukraine. In August, police arrested a 23-year-old accused of calling for the murder of leading Polish politicians. The country has also suffered cyber-attacks attributed to Moscow.

In recent weeks Poland has also experienced a wave of violent incidents in schools, including the death of a school caretaker in a knife attack. In 2024, Tusk himself had stated that he receives threats — shortly after an assassination attempt against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
