On Saturday, 11 July, police officers from Podębice stopped a 36-year-old Lithuanian citizen on motorway A2 who was travelling in a car stolen in Germany.
According to representatives of the local police, shortly after 11 o'clock local time, the duty officer received information that a black Mercedes stolen in Germany might be travelling from Poznań towards Warsaw. Several police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The officers spotted the vehicle in the afternoon. The make, model and colour matched. Although the registration plates were different, this did not reduce the vigilance of the officers. The police assessed that the plates could have been switched, so they decided to stop the car for inspection. The driver complied with the order and stopped in a safe place – at a car park for travellers.
Behind the wheel of the Mercedes was a 36-year-old Lithuanian citizen.
During the inspection, it turned out that the man did not have a key to the car. In addition, two registration plates were found in the vehicle, whose numbers matched those previously reported by the duty officer. The officers checked the vehicle identification number in police IT systems. It was confirmed that this was the stolen vehicle being sought.
The car was taken to a guarded car park, and the 36-year-old was detained and placed in police custody. He was charged with two offences – car theft and using false registration plates. These crimes carry a penalty of up to five years' imprisonment.
