A 36-year-old Lithuanian citizen was arrested in Łódź Voivodeship for driving a Mercedes stolen in Germany with false registration plates.

On Saturday, 11 July, after 11:00, the duty officer at the police station in Podembice received information about a black Mercedes stolen in Germany that could have been moving from Poznań towards Warsaw. Officers were immediately dispatched to motorway A2.
In the afternoon, a patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description – the make, model and colour were correct. The registration plates were different, however, which did not diminish the alertness of the officers.
The officers assessed that the plates could have been changed, so they decided to stop the vehicle for inspection. The driver obeyed the orders and pulled over in a safe place – at a motorist rest area.
Behind the wheel of the Mercedes sat a 36-year-old Lithuanian citizen.
During the inspection, officers found that the man did not have a key to the vehicle. Two registration plates with numbers matching those provided by the duty officer were also found in the vehicle.
A check of the VIN number in police computer systems confirmed that this was the vehicle being sought – according to 15min.lt.
The car was taken to a secure car park, and the 36-year-old was arrested and taken into custody. Polish police charged him with two offences: car theft and use of someone else's registration plates. These crimes carry a sentence of up to 5 years imprisonment.
