In July, the current president of the Republic of Poland appeared before prosecutors from Gdańsk. The conversation took place on the 9th of that month at the presidential Palace in the capital – announced the spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office there, attorney Mariusz Duszyński. Details of the testimony were not disclosed; they will be compared with the remaining evidence material.
The case concerns alleged abuse of authority by persons holding office, who were said to have permitted the free occupation of rooms and apartments in a complex belonging to the Gdańsk Museum of the Second World War. The investigation began in early 2025 and covers the years 2017–2024. At its centre are decisions made by successive heads of the institution.
During the period in question, the institution was managed by three directors: Dr Karol Nawrocki, Dr hab. Grzegorz Berendt and Prof. Rafał Wnuk. Each of them has already given testimony as a witness.
The background to the case is formed by press publications from previous years. According to them, Nawrocki, while still in a managerial position, lived in a deluxe apartment in the museum's hotel for more than six months, although his private residence was located only five kilometres away. He reportedly did not pay any fees.
In January 2025, the head of state explained that during the coronavirus pandemic he underwent isolation there twice for ten-day periods whilst carrying out his duties remotely. He denied having stayed in the premises for two hundred days, though he acknowledged that such a period was covered by a reservation under his name. He also emphasised that the space was used for official meetings with domestic and foreign partners.
The deadline for the investigation was extended until the end of August. The prosecutor's office requested additional documents from the museum; after reviewing them, decisions will be made on any further action.
