The Gdańsk Regional Prosecutor's Office has revealed the specific accusations that Łukasz P. — the husband of a well-known celebrity — will face. He was remanded in custody for three months in early July. The man faces a sentence of up to a quarter-century in prison.
The first charge concerns the embezzlement of more than seven and a half million zlotys from the state budget. According to investigators, the suspect submitted false settlement documents to the National Centre for Research and Development regarding a project financed with European Union funds. He allegedly declared costs that had not actually been incurred — including the rental of a floating vessel, whilst the developed prototype was not yet ready for testing. The value of equipment was allegedly inflated, and some devices reportedly did not exist in the declared period.
The second block of charges encompasses tax crimes related to value-added tax. Documents allegedly issued by an entity marked with the letter "N" were introduced into the company's accounting records, on the basis of which false declarations were submitted. The State Treasury allegedly lost over two million zlotys in unpaid VAT as a result, and additionally an unwarranted refund of nearly half a million was paid out.
The third group of charges concerns the use of invoices which — according to the prosecution authorities — contained data inconsistent with reality. The total value of these documents exceeds thirteen million eight hundred thousand zlotys. They were allegedly used for tax settlements, which resulted in a reduction of public-law liabilities.
Prosecutor's office spokesman Mariusz Marciniak explained that although the second and third charges are based on the same set of documents, they stem from separate criminal provisions and therefore were formulated separately.
In addition to a severe custodial sentence, in the event of a final conviction, Łukasz P. will be required to return the embezzled funds.
