In the Małopolska voivodeship, significant quantities of untaxed tobacco products were uncovered. Officers from the unit in Nowy Sącz, who deal with economic crime, arrested a person suspected of involvement in the black market trade in tobacco.
The entire matter came to light when law enforcement officers inspected a man's vehicle in the Nowy Sącz district. In the car, they found packets of cigarettes lacking the required tax stamps. Further proceedings at locations used by the detainee yielded considerably more serious findings.
Officers discovered equipment that allowed for the manufacture of cigarettes, as well as huge quantities of raw materials and finished goods. In total, nearly seventy thousand cigarettes were seized, approximately two hundred and fifty kilograms of tobacco shreds, and close to four hundred and forty kilograms of dried leaves. The estimated value of unpaid taxes exceeds one million three hundred and forty thousand złoty.
The suspect was charged with receiving and storing goods from an illegal source within the scope of excise duty, and with conducting business activity without the required registration. He faces a fine, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment for up to three years.
During the proceedings, the prosecutor imposed police supervision on him, asset seizure, and a ban on leaving the country.
