A 44-year-old Russian artist died in a shooting on Monday morning in the city of Biała Podlaska in eastern Poland. The man was known for political caricatures depicting, among others, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Local district prosecutors reported the incident on Tuesday. An unidentified assailant fired multiple shots at the artist. Polish authorities are investigating the case as murder.

According to a prosecutor's spokesperson, two Belarusian citizens have been detained in connection with the incident. They were detained near the Belarusian consulate. No charges have yet been brought against either of the suspects.

The deceased artist also created caricatures of Joseph Stalin and the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He moved to Poland in 2021.
