A Katowice court on Friday dismissed the European Public Prosecutor's Office's request for the temporary arrest of Civic Coalition MP and Chairman of the National Media Council Wojciech Król, according to wiadomosci.wp.pl. Earlier that same day, the MP had heard two additional corruption-related charges.
"I am very tired. I am pleased that the court decided that the prosecutor's request does not merit approval," Król told journalists as he left the court.
His legal representative, attorney Marta Smołka, explained that the court considered the arrest to be an excessive and unjustified measure. "The court did not support the prosecutor's request in the respect that it claimed that conditions existed for the application of temporary arrest," she added.
Wojciech Król was detained by officers of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) at the request of the European Public Prosecutor's Office and with the consent of the Sejm. The investigation concerns corruption in the modernisation of tram infrastructure in the Silesian metropolis.
According to investigative findings, Król was alleged to have accepted financial benefits in the form of free foreign trips, including a visit to Thailand, and the free use of a car. The MP categorically denies these accusations, claiming that he has never been to Thailand and borrowed the car from a friend for a trip with acquaintances.
Last week, in connection with the ongoing investigation, Król was suspended from his membership rights in the Civic Coalition club and lost his position as deputy chairman of that club.
