A married couple of Russian citizens heard the verdict in a trial for espionage. The District Court in Sosnowiec decided on seven years in prison for Igor R. and three years for his wife Irina R. The ruling can still be appealed.
According to the indictment, in the period from February to August 2022, the man collected data on Russian opposition figures living in Poland and organisations helping them. He recorded this information on an encrypted storage device, which he then passed to his wife. The woman was to deliver materials to FSB agents within the Russian Federation. The judge found her guilty of supporting an intelligence operation.
The accused was also said to have participated in the preparation of a package containing an explosive charge. In July of last year, together with two Ukrainian citizens and another Russian, he sent a parcel for transport. The package was seized at a courier's sorting facility in Łódź Voivodeship. Inside were found, among other things, nitroglycerin, military electronic detonators, an initiating circuit, and parts of a cumulative warhead. Experts assessed that the explosion could have caused serious damage to facilities.
Time spent in custody has been deducted from the sentence. The man has been in custody since July 2024, the woman since November of the same year. The court also acquitted them of the costs of the proceedings.
The National Prosecutor's Office informed that it will consider a possible appeal after receiving the written justification. The lawyer for Irina R. also announced that the decision on appeal will be made in consultation with her client.
