The District Prosecutor's Office in Płock has launched an investigation into the death of a 46-year-old man who died during a police intervention on the night of 29 to 30 May. According to fakt.pl, the prosecutor's office spokesman, prosecutor Bartosz Maliszewski, informed that proceedings are being conducted under article 231 § 1 of the Penal Code, concerning abuse of authority by public officials, and article 155 of the Penal Code – unintentional causing of death.
The tragedy occurred around 4 a.m. on Czwartaków Street in Płock's Podolszyce Południe district, in the vicinity of a bus stop and nearby supermarket. A dispatcher received a report concerning a naked, bleeding man who was running about and shouting in the area. During the intervention, the 46-year-old stopped breathing. Resuscitation proved unsuccessful.
Prosecutor Maliszewski informed that investigators have so far questioned several witnesses, including neighbours and the deceased man's sister. Police officers who participated in the intervention have not yet been questioned. The prosecutor conducting the case plans to order a forensic autopsy, which – along with toxicological tests – is expected to be crucial in establishing the circumstances of the man's death.
Investigators have secured footage from several sources, as well as recordings from officers' body cameras. The police announced parallel internal investigative measures, and police control offices have been notified of the case.
Several grammes of a substance, probably marijuana, were secured in the 46-year-old's flat, as well as preparations related to muscle mass growth – as the spokesman clarified, these were anabolic steroids. Earlier, it had also been publicly reported that tens of thousands of Polish zlotys had been secured, along with unspecified substances sent for further testing.
Addressing the injuries visible on the man's body, prosecutor Maliszewski pointed to abrasions or cuts to the epidermis on the leg, near the foot.
The question of responsibility for the 46-year-old's death remains unanswered for now. The prosecutor's office indicates that it will be resolved only by the results of the autopsy, toxicological tests and analysis of the secured recordings.
