Death of an amber trader in a swimming pool: unsolved crime in Tricity

A man who dealt in amber was found dead in a house in Tricity. The body was lying in a swimming pool. Police officers and a prosecutor who arrived at the property did not treat it as murder. The crime scene was not secured. The priority appeared to be quickly removing the body. Only after several days did a doctor conducting an autopsy conclude that the cause of death was suffocation.

The delay in securing the area lasted several dozen hours. Such a time could have been sufficient to destroy evidence. Those present in the building at the time were close family members. The security system allegedly recorded nothing suspicious.

The case quickly raised doubts. It turned out that the victim's wife personally knows the prosecutor conducting the investigation. One other person was also present at the scene. Initially, this person gave testimony incriminating the wife and son of the deceased, but later retracted it.

Due to these circumstances, the investigation was transferred to a different prosecutor's office. Nevertheless, proceedings were discontinued due to an alleged lack of evidence.

Mikołaj Podolski, author of a publication on crime in the region, drew attention in an interview for the Interia website to the fact that modern forensic science allows for very detailed examination of premises. Experts can find microscopic traces of blood or hair fibres. In this case, the building through which the body could have been dragged did not receive proper analysis.

After the publication of his book, the author passed new facts to investigators. In his view, this material should be sufficient to reopen the case. Podolski also claims that there is a conviction in Tricity about the impunity of persons possessing significant wealth.

The death of the amber dealer triggered a series of subsequent tragedies. Two close relatives of the deceased died as a result of alcohol abuse. The victim's son, considered the main suspect, is also dead—apparently from a drug overdose.
