Questioning in connection with attack at abbey

Ukrainian citizen Ihor M. was questioned on Wednesday by the public prosecutor's office in connection with the knife attack in Jarosław. According to dorzeczy.pl and RMF FM radio station, the man admitted to the acts of which he is accused. As noted by TVP3 Rzeszów, the 31-year-old exercised his right to refuse to make a statement.

The questioning took place after the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl appointed two forensic psychiatrists for the third time to assess the mental health of the suspect. The man had not previously been questioned owing to health problems.

The act and victims

Ihor M. is suspected of having struck Rev. Stanisław Zbojnowicz multiple times with a knife on 24 September 2024 in Jarosław, resulting in his death. He also attempted to kill Rev. Marek Pieńkowski, Rev. Adrian Mantykiewicz, Krzysztof G. and Ewa S., causing them serious injuries threatening their lives.

The condition of two of the most seriously injured men, who remain hospitalised, has improved significantly. According to a post from the "Jarosławskie Opactwo – po tragedii" Facebook profile, Rev. Marek Pieńkowski was disconnected from a ventilator, has begun communicating in short sentences and received holy communion.

Court decision and expert opinions

The court imposed a three-month remand on Ihor M. carried out in a psychiatric hospital ward on a secure forensic psychiatry unit. The man faces a life sentence.

Initial opinions from forensic psychiatrists revealed acute psychotic disorders in the suspect and lack of logical contact. In the second opinion, the experts noted a slight improvement in the form of diminished hostility and normalisation of psychomotor drive. The 31-year-old has been assigned a court-appointed defender.
