On Sunday, 14 June, at around 22:30 on the corner of Dietla and Sukiennicza streets in central Kraków, the driver of a Mercedes struck a 79-year-old pedestrian at a marked crossing. The man drove off without providing assistance to the victim.
The victim of the accident turned out to be a well-known Kraków lawyer, Jerzy Sioła. He was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Kraków police quickly located and arrested the suspect the same night. Behind the wheel of the Mercedes was a 47-year-old from Ukraine, resident of the Ruczaj housing estate.
Testing revealed the presence of alcohol and amphetamine in the driver's system. He faces up to 20 years in prison for causing a fatal accident and fleeing the scene. The court imposed a three-month remand in custody against him.
