Hospital deputy director in Gniezno dismissed following scandal over child-treatment ban
The District Hospital in Gniezno terminated its contract with deputy director Mateusz Hen following a wiadomosci.wp.pl report revealing his criminal convictions and prohibition from treating children.
Gniezno: end of partnership with deputy director after scandal brought to light
The District Hospital in Gniezno terminated its contract with Mateusz Hen, who held the position of deputy director for medical care – hospital director Filip Waligóra informed wiadomosci.wp.pl. The decision came following Monday's publication by Wirtualna Polska reporters Michał Janczura and Łukasz Frątczak, who described a pathological situation at the hospital.
"I did this for the sake of the hospital's reputation and the public impact of the press publication, which I fully understand," Waligóra said in a statement sent to the editorial office.
The director noted that ending the partnership with Hen had been planned anyway. "That is why today I was able to promptly appoint his successor, as the new deputy director accepted my proposal a few weeks ago," Waligóra wrote. He also informed that the hospital is discontinuing services from medical companies that have been providing services to the facility for years.
Child-treatment ban and multiple criminal convictions
Mateusz Hen was sentenced by final judgment for assaulting the partner of his ex-wife. Although the victim was an adult, the court imposed on him a prohibition from treating children under the so-called "Kamila's law" provisions. In practice, this meant that on days when he was on duty, children admitted to the ward had to be transferred to other facilities.
At the same time, Hen, as deputy director for medical care, supervised the paediatric ward among other departments at the hospital.
WP reporters also established that the surgeon has at least seven final criminal convictions that have since been expunged. He was convicted, among other offences, of participation in a fuel mafia, assault, VAT fraud, and falsification of medical documentation.
Suspension from duties and investigation
In his statement, Waligóra informed that Hen has been suspended from all duties, with the exception of services provided in the palliative care ward, pending clarification of the matter. "The matter concerns establishing whether he actually admitted children despite the prohibition. The hospital has never received any such reports," the director emphasised.
Civic Coalition suspends Hen's membership rights
Since 2025, Mateusz Hen has been a member of the local structures of the Civic Coalition, which holds power in Gniezno and the Gniezno county. According to information obtained by WP, the Greater Poland structures of the Civic Coalition formally suspended him from party membership rights following the scandal's revelation.
