The Regional Court in Gdańsk has concluded the proceedings in the death of 78-year-old Józef D. from Brzeźnie. On Friday, sentences were announced: two of the accused were each sentenced to 25 years in prison, the third to 20 years. The ruling may still be appealed.

The tragedy occurred on 2 February 2025 in the early morning hours. The victim was walking to church services on Młodzieży Polskiej Street when he was attacked. He died from multiple blows from a kitchen implement to the head area.

The investigation revealed that the direct perpetrator was a 20-year-old who was in a romantic relationship with the victim's granddaughter. The 26-year-old husband of the woman kept watch in the area at the time. The prosecutor charged all three with murder with particular cruelty, however the court did not accept this classification.

During the trial, the youngest of the accused admitted guilt, stating that he had acted under the influence of strong emotions towards the woman. The victim's husband rejected the charges, claiming that conversations about depriving his grandfather-in-law of life were harmless fantasies. The 25-year-old admitted guilt partially.

The motive was identified as a dispute over an apartment. The young couple with a child had moved in with the elderly relative due to lack of funds for rent. Tensions resulting from close living quarters led to the tragedy.
