The appellate court in Białystok upheld the conviction of two perpetrators who, several years ago, triggered emergency braking on numerous trains in Podlaskie. Both men exploited a radio system designed to immediately halt trains in situations of danger.
Mateusz K., formerly employed by the police in Białystok, received one year imprisonment. His accomplice Dawid S., a resident of Skierniewice, must pay a fine of 16,000 złotys (400 daily rates of 40 złotys). The first instance court had imposed harsher sentences – two years and one and a half years in prison respectively.
The second instance changed the legal classification of the charges against them, which resulted in the sentences being reduced. Initially, the prosecutor accused them of causing a threat to property valued at over 149 million złotys. The district court partially agreed with this position.
The incidents occurred three years ago. As a result of the perpetrators' actions, 18 passenger and freight trains came to a halt. The events took place in the Łap area and on the Sokółka–Szepietowo section.
The prosecutor announced the intention to file a request for a justification of the appellate court's decision.
