Murder of 49-year-old Diana in woodland in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Police seek perpetrator

The body of 49-year-old Diana R. was found on Friday in woodland near the Żabieniec housing estate. Police are investigating and appealing to drivers for dashcam footage.

Woman's body discovered near waterfall. Investigation underway

On Friday at approximately 18:30, a jogger came across the remains of 49-year-old Diana R. near a waterfall in woodland near the Żabieniec housing estate in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. The woman had gone out to walk her dog — according to Interia, she left work around 15:30 and arrived home by car within at most fifteen minutes.

The prosecutor's office has preliminarily established that the victim had at least two blunt-force head injuries and a wound inflicted with a sharp instrument in the hip area. "We can narrow the time of the incident to the period between the moment she left work and the time the body was found," announced Stanisław Bar, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Opole. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

"She knew the woodland like the back of her hand"

Neighbours of the murdered woman are shocked. "Her name was Diana, but we called her Gosia. She knew the woodland like the back of her hand. It's all strange, the murder happened in the middle of the day, it's incomprehensible," one neighbour told Fakt.

An employee of the Twierdza cinema at the Municipal Culture Centre in Kędzierzyn-Koźle, who saw the victim the day before her death, recalled: "She worked in our cinema, sometimes she sat at the till or worked in the café. We are shocked by what has happened. She was a kind, helpful person. According to him, nothing at that time indicated that the woman might have feared for her safety.

From the investigators' findings to date, it emerges that Diana R. had no enemies and was liked in her community. Prosecutor Bar conveyed that no police interventions had been recorded at her place of residence, and she was in a harmonious marriage with her husband. On the day of the tragedy, the victim's husband was abroad — neighbours indicated that he regularly travelled to Sweden for fishing trips.

Police seek footage and warn against "citizen patrols"

Investigators are appealing to drivers who travelled through the area of the Żabieniec housing estate, nearby allotments and the Odrzańskie Ogrody shopping centre on 28 August between 14:00 and 20:00. Anyone with dashcam recordings from that time and location is asked to report to the police station.

"We are securing CCTV footage, dashcam recordings. We are gradually narrowing down the circle of potential suspects," said Superintendent Ewelina Karpińska from the Press Team of KWP in Opole. Additional police forces have been deployed to Kędzierzyn-Koźle, operating around the clock, including in civilian clothes.

In a statement to residents on Monday, police addressed posts appearing on the internet regarding so-called citizen patrols. The authorities assured residents that the area is being patrolled and warned against independently engaging in search operations.

"Uncoordinated groups moving through the city area could lead to mistakes, unnecessary interventions against innocent people or destruction of key evidence," the Kędzierzyn-Koźle police said in their appeal.

Numerous traces have already been secured, and witness interviews are ongoing. "The best support for our work will be the provision of any information, concerning signals and recordings," the statement emphasised. The perpetrator remains at large.
