The indictment against Corporal Rafał R., who attacked an unknown man with a machete on a street in Legionów near Warsaw in December of last year, has been filed with the court. The soldier faces a sentence of life imprisonment.

The incident took place on 21 December 2025 at approximately 16:20 on ul. Jana Henryka Dąbrowskiego. According to the prosecution's investigation, the perpetrator first struck the victim on the neck with the back of the machete, then delivered a blow with the blade to the head, causing extensive bleeding. Investigators attribute to him actions carried out with so-called eventual intent to deprive the victim of life.

The injured man survived the attack. At the time of the incident, the corporal had significantly limited capacity to control his own conduct, whilst retaining the capacity to understand the significance of the act. The prosecution did not disclose what caused this state.

The suspect is currently in temporary detention, extended until 20 June 2026. The Warsaw-Praga District Court will shortly consider a motion for continued application of this preventive measure. Investigators have not revealed which unit the accused served in, nor what motives drove him.
