Zoo in Łączna: findings on animals following investigative operations
The prosecution and police have concluded operations at the premises of the private zoo in Łączna near Mieroszów. According to infowet.pl, during a meeting attended by the mayor of Mieroszów, it was agreed that the facility would be handed over to the representative of Marcin N. – the suspect in the case – and staff would care for the animals remaining on the premises. It was stipulated that the suspects themselves would not have access to caring for the animals.
Remand in custody of the zoo owner was not applied. The District Court in Wałbrzych on Thursday evening did not uphold the prosecution's request for the temporary arrest of the owner and four other people. All five detainees were informed of charges of animal cruelty.
On Tuesday, officers entered the zoo premises on the order of the prosecution. An inspection was carried out and five employees were detained. The animals were to be transported to other care facilities. In total, 33 animals were removed on Tuesday and Wednesday, with some of them going abroad. The operations resulted from a complaint filed by animal welfare organisations concerning ill-treatment of animals at the facility.
The health condition of the remaining animals will be re-examined by experts. Their findings could form the basis for possible relocation of the remaining animals – the prosecution announced. The zoo will remain closed at least until Monday, according to information from the owner's representative, Marta Zając-Ossowska.
