Officials from the Auxiliary Superintendency in Special Operations (SAOE) carried out an undercover operation this morning in the south-west region of Puerto Rico with 66 arrest warrants for drug trafficking and violations of the Firearms Law, according to wapa.tv.

The exact number of people arrested had not been confirmed at the time. The authorities specified that several people were apprehended and that another 15 were released to face new criminal charges.

The operation was the result of more than seven months of undercover investigation. Clandestinely monitored transactions made it possible to identify the individuals who were apprehended this Tuesday.

Among the 16 municipalities included in the operation are Aguadilla, Ponce and Mayagüez. The detainees were transferred to the Bobby Cruz Convention Centre in Hormigueros to be processed by the authorities.

The superintendent of the Police, Joseph González, had scheduled a press conference for 10:30 a.m. in San Juan, at which additional details about the operation and the final number of arrests were expected to be provided.
