16-year-old youth faces murder charges following death of grandmother in Guaynabo
The Bayamón Prosecutor's Office filed first-degree murder charges, attempted murder and violation of the Weapons Law on Sunday against a 16-year-old teenager identified as Elvin William Reyes Rosas, according to telemundopr.com. The youth is suspected of having stabbed his 67-year-old grandmother on Saturday outside Santa María shopping centre, located on highway PR-177 in Guaynabo.
A judge set bail of $225,000 for the three charges, which the accused failed to pay. Authorities had previously stated that they would prosecute the minor as an adult. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8 October.
In the same incident on Saturday, Reyes Rosas allegedly also attacked his brother, a fact which gives rise to the attempted murder charge.
Neighbours of the victim told Telenoticias that the woman had told them she feared that the accused could kill her. The Department of the Family confirmed having "an active case" related to the minor, without providing further details about its contents.
