A 17-year-old teenager died on Thursday night after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds on the basketball court at the El Cortijo housing estate in Bayamón, according to elnuevodia.com.
A call to the Emergency Services 9-1-1 system alerted police to gunshots in the sector. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the body of the minor, identified as Yandiel A. Uribe Bonilla, who presented multiple gunshot wounds that caused his death on the spot, according to the preliminary report.
As officers processed the scene, it emerged that a second person had arrived with gunshot wounds at a Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (CDT) in the San Juan area. That person told investigators they were on the El Cortijo court at the moment of the gunfire.
Lieutenant José Carrión, deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Body (CIC) of Bayamón, confirmed in statements to Telenoticias that this is an additional victim who was present during the incident. A subsequent police report identified the second wounded person as a 19-year-old young man, who remains in critical condition.
Carrión noted that multiple shell casings of different calibres were recovered at the scene, suggesting the possible involvement of more than one shooter. "We cannot rule out that it was more than one person," the lieutenant affirmed. The investigation has not yet determined the exact number of people involved in the shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that Uribe Bonilla was of Dominican nationality. Officers conducted a sweep to identify possible digital evidence and plan to interview the teenager's relatives to attempt to establish the motive for the crime.
The case is being investigated by the Homicide Division of the CIC of Bayamón in coordination with prosecutor Aileen González. The authorities request that anyone who has information that could help clarify the case call 787-343-2020.
