An active police officer shot and wounded a 22-year-old woman during an incident that occurred on Friday afternoon in the La Fe community within the municipality of Naguabo.
Initial accounts indicate that both women engaged in an argument that escalated into an armed confrontation. The officer allegedly fired the shots that struck the other woman.
After sustaining the injuries, the victim was transported by air to the Medical Centre in the capital. Authorities indicated that, although she received emergency care, she is out of danger and her condition is progressing favourably.
The case came under the scrutiny of the Special Investigations Bureau (NIE), the agency responsible for investigating incidents involving members of the police force. Investigators are seeking to establish whether the use of the standard-issue firearm was justified by a genuine threat situation or whether there was any violation of protocols.
The identities of the officer and the wounded person have not been disclosed, nor has it been reported whether the alleged aggressor was arrested or removed from duty whilst the investigation proceeds.
