One year without Gabriela Nicole: her mother vows to continue seeking justice
Telemundo33.com reports that this Tuesday marks one year since the murder of Gabriela Nicole Pratts, the 16-year-old girl stabbed near midnight on 11 August 2024 in Aibonito, a mountainous municipality in central Puerto Rico.
Lisandra Rosario, the teenager's mother, posted a message on her Facebook account coinciding with the date and day 15 of the trial for the crime.
"Lela, it deeply hurts me that you are not here to live everything that was left ahead of you. It hurts me that someone decided to take your life in the cruelest way and leave us with this emptiness that we never chose," wrote Rosario.
And she added: "But I want you to know something, the pain will not destroy me. I will transform each tear into strength, each memory into hope. And with each passing day, I will continue saying your name. Because while I live, Gabriela Nicole will live in my heart. And while I have a voice, I will continue seeking justice for my baby."
The facts and the ongoing trial
The events occurred amid a quarrel among several young women that ended in a fatal stabbing. Witnesses testified during the trial that Gabriela Nicole was attempting to defend her sister when she was attacked with blows and stab wounds.
Pathologist Javier Serrano Serrano determined that the young woman suffered 11 wounds caused by a single sharp object and certified her death as homicide. The wounds were located on the chest, the arm, the pelvis and the buttock.
The prosecution accuses Anthonieska Avilés of attacking Gabriela Nicole with the sharp object. Avilés faces charges of first-degree murder and violations of Puerto Rico's Weapons Law.
Her mother, Elvia Cabrera Rivera, was already found guilty of first-degree murder. According to the evidence and testimonies presented at trial, Cabrera handed the weapon to her daughter, with which she allegedly stabbed the teenager.
The crime shocked Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican communities in various areas of the United States.
