Artificial intelligence cameras identify stolen vehicle in Old San Juan
The Municipality of San Juan arrested two people this afternoon who were travelling in a vehicle reported as stolen in Fajardo, after the municipality's artificial intelligence camera surveillance system detected the vehicle's entry into Old San Juan, according to noticel.com.
Following the alert generated by the surveillance system, the Vehicle Theft Division of the Puerto Rico Police notified San Juan Municipal Police. Municipal officers mobilised immediately to the area, located the vehicle and proceeded to arrest its two occupants. During the intervention, a firearm was also seized from inside the car.
The driver was identified as José Rodríguez Contreras, 36 years old. According to information provided to municipal authorities, Rodríguez Contreras has an arrest warrant issued by the state of Florida related to the vehicle theft.
The passenger, Orlando Santana, 32 years old, has a previous criminal record for murder and is out on bail in a pending case linked to controlled substances, according to preliminary information received during the intervention.
Juan Jackson, commissioner of San Juan Municipal Police, highlighted the speed of the operational response. "Once we received the alert, our officers were able to mobilise immediately, identify the vehicle and carry out the arrests. Coordination with the Puerto Rico Police, combined with the technological tools we have available, allows us to be more effective when intervening and responding to situations that require quick action," he said.
Both arrested individuals were transferred to the Vehicle Theft Division of San Juan of the Puerto Rico Police, which assumed jurisdiction of the case and will continue with the investigation and corresponding procedures.
San Juan's mayor, Miguel Romero Lugo, used the incident to reaffirm the municipality's commitment to investing in security technology. "These tools and equipment not only strengthen our prevention and surveillance capacity; they have also contributed to identifying vehicles, individuals and other information that can be decisive in clarifying police cases and investigations. We will continue to invest responsibly in technology that complements the work of our officers and allows us to continue delivering results in terms of security," Romero Lugo said.
