Home robbery in Vega Baja: woman injured and four assailants flee disguised as police officers
Dozens of agents from the Puerto Rico Police have been tracking the surroundings of the Sabana neighbourhood in Vega Baja since the morning of 14 October, following a home robbery in which four individuals beat a woman and caused her an open head wound. According to elnuevodia.com, the suspects wore light blue shirts with an appearance similar to that of a police uniform.
The director of the Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) for the Bayamón region, Raúl Negrón, explained that the events began at approximately 7:40 in the morning, near a stable close to San Vicente street. The victim had just dropped off her children at school when, upon returning home, she found the four subjects waiting for her.
"When she arrives at her residence, there are four individuals waiting for her. They begin to threaten her to open the door of her residence," Negrón stated.
When the woman refused, a struggle ensued. "A struggle begins and they start to beat her and the neighbours call 9-1-1," the officer indicated. As a result, the victim suffered an open head wound.
Gunshots from neighbours and pursuit through the forest
During the incident, shots were fired by both the assailants and residents of the area. Negrón clarified that there was "no exchange" between both groups and ruled out that the Police had fired. Initially it was reported that a civilian may have wounded one of the assailants, but to date no evidence has been found to confirm that any of the suspects is injured.
When officers arrived at the scene, the four subjects fled towards a forest in the vicinity. "When the police arrive, a pursuit begins through the forest that is behind me," stated the CIC director.
The preliminary inventory of what was stolen points to a chain and a mobile telephone. Negrón indicated that the investigation is still ongoing as to whether the individuals were wearing masks, although he confirmed that their clothing had "colours similar to those of the police."
Extensive search operation
The operation involved units from Vega Alta and Dorado, the K-9 canine unit and the helicopter of the United Rapid Action Forces (FURA). Reporters from elnuevodia.com observed patrol cars entering the grounds of the Vega Baja municipal landfill.
"We do not rule out any lead or establish any angle. We have to let the investigation mature to determine what happened here," Negrón concluded.
