Accused of assault on police sergeant in Turabo Gardens remain in custody
The Caguas District Attorney filed charges on Friday against Eduardo A. Nieves, 24 years old, and Juan A. Colón Morales, 41, according to telemundopr.com. Both are accused of assaulting a police sergeant on the previous Thursday in the Turabo Gardens residential development in Caguas.
According to the information, the injured officer—43 years old—was off duty when Nieves, by intimidation with a firearm, stripped him of a gold chain and bracelet. Nieves boarded the passenger side of a Toyota RAV4 and left the area.
The information was immediately transmitted to the Police. Officers from the Motorised Unit and other divisions intercepted the vehicle in which the suspects were travelling and arrested Colón Morales. During the operation, the car was seized along with a Springfield XD .45-calibre pistol, which was reported as stolen.
Nieves managed to flee the scene, but was arrested hours later by personnel from the Caguas Prevention Unit whilst walking along the PR-52 highway. The stolen property was found in his possession.
The two defendants face charges of aggravated robbery, receiving, disposition and transportation of goods that are the object of a crime, aggravated breaking and entering, carrying and use of firearms without a licence, and firing or pointing firearms in violation of the Firearms Law.
Judge María T. Hernández Calzada determined probable cause for arrest and set bail of $100,000 for each, which they were unable to satisfy. Both were admitted to Bayamón jail pending a preliminary hearing, scheduled for 13 October.
Officer Ángel Ramos conducted the investigation under the supervision of Sergeant José Medina.
