Alexander Bruno Pastrana, 45, a former Double A baseball pitcher, was shot dead on Saturday night outside a business on Avelino López road in Caimito, according to elnuevodia.com.
A call to the Emergency System 9-1-1 reported a serious assault at approximately 7:17 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Bruno Pastrana dead, with multiple gunshot wounds to the face, head and body.
Two armed men with covered faces
Lieutenant Arnaldo Ruiz of the Criminal Investigation Corps of San Juan indicated that initial accounts point to two masked individuals arriving at the location in a small compact vehicle. "One was carrying a long gun and the other a handgun and they fired several shots at him," Ruiz described.
Bruno Pastrana had stopped briefly at the business to buy something. "Apparently he was heading to a game," the lieutenant noted. The person accompanying him remained in the vehicle at the time of the attack. The attackers left immediately after the shooting.
Approximately 30 shell casings were recovered at the scene, the vast majority from a handgun. At present there is no precise description of the attackers' vehicle beyond it being a small and compact car.
No confirmed motive
Ruiz indicated that the investigation is not ruling out any hypothesis. Bruno Pastrana's family members stated they had no knowledge of him having problems with anyone. The lieutenant noted that the attackers likely waited for him near the business, given that the victim was a resident of the same neighbourhood and it was not unusual for him to stop there.
Bruno Pastrana worked managing a grocery shop and held a contract as a recreational leader with the Municipality of San Juan.
Career in Double A baseball
The Double A Baseball League confirmed that Bruno Pastrana pitched in the top tournament for the teams of Comerío, Cidra, Fajardo and Maunabo. In 2010 he set a record with 10 saves. He also served as coach for the Cariduros of Fajardo.
His son, Alex Bruno, has been playing since last year with the Pescadores del Plata of Comerío and also participates in university baseball in the United States.
Context of crime
Up to that Saturday, police had reported 278 homicides so far this year, six fewer than the 284 recorded on the same date last year.
