The courtroom of the Court of First Instance of Aibonito approved the request of the legal representatives of Anthonieska Avilés so that the defendant maintains her identity concealed whilst the criminal proceedings against her are underway. The young woman is charged in connection with the death of Gabriela Nicole Pratts.
According to the ruling by the magistrate, it is prohibited to publish or broadcast during hearings information such as her name, age, address, academic career or work activity. The information was disclosed by Telemundo 51.
The defendant attended a preparatory hearing on Monday in the Aibonito courts, where petitions from the parties are reviewed. During that appearance, her defence attorney filed the request for additional safeguards.
The fatal incident occurred around midnight on 11 August 2025, at the desvío Roberto Colón. A discussion between the two minors ended with Pratts dead after receiving several stab wounds.
Elvia Cabrera, Anthonieska's mother, is also being prosecuted for this matter and is already in the trial phase.
In a recent turn of events, the defendant regained her liberty following a ruling by Judge Cristina Córdova Ponce that granted the habeas corpus petition that was filed. As part of the precautionary measures, she must remain permanently confined.
The proceedings against Avilés will begin on 6 April with the selection of jury members. In Cabrera's case, the panel has already been designated: eight female members and four male members.
Additionally, a trio of new prosecutors will join the prosecution from 1 May, after Orlando Velázquez stepped down from his position.
