Three officers testify on first day of trial against Elvia Cabrera for Gabriela Nicole's death
The jury trial against Elvia Cabrera Rivera for the murder of Gabriela Nicole Pratts began this Friday in Aibonito Court, according to telemundopr.com. The defendant entered the courtroom with a plea of not guilty; the opening day included testimony from three officers of the Aibonito District Police.
The first witness was officer Adriana Guzmán Cardenales, who was on duty at the barracks the night of the crime. She testified to receiving a call at 12:02 a.m. on 11 August reporting a situation at the Aibonito detour. It was a female voice, according to the officer. In cross-examination by Mayra López Mulero, defence attorney, Guzmán Cardenales confirmed that in her handwritten notes she recorded the time, the phrase "detour discussion" and a telephone number of the caller. Next to the time was a cross-out whose content the officer said she could not recall.
The second testimony was given by officer Alfredo Fortier Soto, also of Aibonito District, who that night was conducting preventative patrols and responding to complaints. Fortier Soto explained that he was attending an accident when his superior ordered him to proceed urgently to the Mennonite Hospital in the municipality. He arrived around 12:40 a.m. and found Gabriela Nicole Pratts, aged 16, in the emergency room. The attending physician informed him that the minor "had been wounded with a sharp object" and presented eight wounds: one on the right arm, two on the chest—in the "heart area"—one on the pelvis and four on the left buttock.
In the course of that same night, Fortier Soto interviewed Chris Ángel González Rodríguez, aged 16, described as a friend of Gabriela, who was present with his mother. The teenager told the officer that a person identified as Anthonieshka had assaulted his friend, that Gabriela intervened to defend her sister, and that, once fallen to the ground, someone known as "Antianis" kicked her in the head. González Rodríguez also mentioned an individual with the alias "GABA" and specified that the attacker was the daughter of Elvia. The officer indicated that the interview could not be concluded because "the young man went into crisis" and had to be attended to.
The third witness was officer Héctor Luis Garriga Matos, who that night accompanied Fortier on preventative patrols. Garriga Matos confirmed that both were attending the accident in Aibonito when they received the order to proceed to the Mennonite Hospital. He specified that, by division of duties, he was handling the accident complaint and that it was Fortier who was put in charge of investigating any subsequent incident. After taking his colleague to the hospital, he received the order to secure the crime scene at the detour: he parked his marked patrol car and placed red pyramids to control traffic, awaiting CIC personnel responsible for collecting evidence.
In cross-examination, Garriga Matos acknowledged that a single patrol was insufficient to completely block access to the detour and that three units would have been needed to achieve that. He admitted there was a period when the area was not completely closed off. The defence noted on the record that that night was the closing of summer, a large-scale event, and that many citizens had parked their vehicles at the detour walkway and were attempting to recover them.
The crime occurred shortly before midnight on 11 August 2025 at the Roberto Colón detour in Aibonito, when a quarrel among several young women resulted in a knife attack against Gabriela Nicole Pratts. In addition to the murder charge, Elvia Cabrera faces charges for violation of the Weapons Act. Both she and her daughter are facing charges on all counts; each was imposed a bail of one million dollars.
The jury is made up of eight women and four men, with six alternate jurors.
