According to telemundopr.com, Judge Karina Díaz Pérez found probable cause for arrest against Carlos Reyes Torres, a 49-year-old mechanic and Caguas resident, for allegedly charging $45,168 in payments for vehicle repairs that he never performed.
The victims are mostly elderly adults between 67 and 91 years old, who handed over their vehicles to Reyes Torres trusting in his services as a mechanic. One of the vehicles, a 2003 Nissan Sentra, could not be recovered following the investigation.
The Public Prosecutor's Office filed charges against him for unlawful appropriation, mistreatment of elderly persons, aggravated damage, fraud and fraud in the execution of works. The judge set bail at $28,000, which the accused was able to post.
Reyes Torres was booked and released provisionally under electronic supervision. Preliminary hearings have been scheduled for 13 and 14 October.
The investigation was conducted by agents Carmen González, José López and Luis Morales, of the Vehicle Theft Investigation Division of Caguas.
