The secretary of the Department of Education, Eliezer Ramos Parés, confirmed on Monday that Elvin William Reyes Rosas, 16, charged with the murder of his grandmother in Guaynabo, did not appear in any active school enrolment registry, according to telemundopr.com.
In an interview with Radio Isla 1320 AM, Ramos Parés noted that the teenager appeared active in the system in previous years, but with periods of prolonged absenteeism. "He had been enrolled previously, but likewise there was quite chronic absenteeism on this young man's part from school," the official stated.
The Bayamón Prosecutor's Office filed charges on Sunday for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and violation of the Firearms Act against the adolescent. According to the accusation, Reyes Rosas stabbed his grandmother—a 67-year-old woman—on Saturday outside the Santa María shopping centre, located on PR-177 highway. In the same incident, the minor allegedly also attacked his brother, a fact that gives rise to the attempted murder charge.
Prosecuted as an adult, a judge imposed a bail of $225,000 that he was unable to afford. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for 8 October.
Neighbours of the victim told Telenoticias that the woman lived in fear of the accused and had explicitly told them that she was afraid he would kill her.
The Department of the Family confirmed, for its part, that it was maintaining an active case linked to the minor, without offering additional details about its nature.
